Summer Collection 2025: In Collaboration With Nature

Mimi Seton was raised between New York City, the NY suburbs and a progressive boarding school on an organic farm in the Adirondack mountains. It was living in a self-sufficient community with visionary educators that nurtured her life-long love of Nature.

Seton has since lived in five countries, working mainly in Theatre and Music until 2013. She started her career at Berkeley Repertory as a classically trained actress-singer, then moved into writing, composing, and directing. Her primary curiosity focused on the capacities of the human voice, especially singing, from the traditional to the experimental. As a composer-lyricist, she devised theatre-music pieces that embraced styles ranging from Minimalist choral work with no words, to songs with Jazz, Blues and Broadway influences. A maverick working outside Broadway traditions, Mimi was compared to a number of prominent composers including Sondheim and Meredith Monk. From 1980 on, she also taught voice and acting, and recorded over 2000 voice overs as a director and actor.

In 2013, she was in a car crash where she sustained injuries that left her with a hearing disorder that made it impossible to continue composing music. Eventually, she turned to visual art-making, creating drawings, paintings and mixed media pieces in the following categories, often modifying the work digitally:

1) Abstracts that celebrate the pure joy of color, line, form and texture.

2) Renderings of God and Goddess figures, mostly from the Hindu pantheon. (Her great-grandfather was Indian.)

3) Portraits of women

4) Candid photos of people - with an emphasis on moments of strong emotion.

5) Photos of the landscapes she moves through, modified digitally to move them from the representational toward the imaginary. The photos in this collection are examples of that approach.
